Dear Representative:

Some facts about the Ex-Im Bank:

· Founded during the Great Depression to create jobs by facilitating the export of American-made goods, the bank continues to serve that purpose by providing financing that enables customers in other countries to buy U.S. goods and services.

· The Ex-Im Bank is not a threat to private sector lenders; it provides financing and loan guarantees only in cases where private lenders are unable or unwilling to do so.

· Ex-Im financing has supported nearly 1.2 million U.S. jobs since 2009, including 205,000 in 2013.

· In Washington state, the most trade-dependent in the nation, the Ex-Im Bank has supported 180 exporters since 2007, including 130 small businesses.

· Boeing is the biggest user of Ex-Im credit programs, but the bank is also vital to hundreds of small and medium-sized companies throughout the state, including many Boeing suppliers. Last year, 90 percent of Ex-Im transactions were for small businesses.

· Manufacturing and agriculture are among the Washington industries that rely on the Ex-Im bank. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Calaway Trading, an Ellensburg-based exporter of agricultural commodity products, are the state’s second- and third-largest users of Ex-Im credit programs.

· The Ex-Im Bank does not cost taxpayers anything. It operates by charging fees and interest on its loans. Last year, it turned a profit and returned $1 billion to the U.S. Treasury.

· The Ex-Im Bank does not provide “subsidies” to business, it provides loans and loan guarantees at market rates to any company that meets its requirements.

· If the Ex-Im Bank is not reauthorized, it will cost Washington state jobs. That’s because there are 60 other export credit agencies around the world where overseas customers can get financing to purchase products from foreign competitors.
