MEDIA ADVISORY: AWB Holiday Kids' Tree Lighting is Dec. 2

Tree-lighting in Capitol rotunda set for 6 p.m. Friday as AWB celebrates 28th annual Holiday Kids’ Tree program; tree arrives for decorations Nov. 29

OLYMPIA — The Association of Washington Business welcomes the arrival of the 2016 holiday season Friday with a 6 p.m. tree-lighting ceremony at the Capitol rotunda.

Gov. Jay Inslee will be on hand to light the tree with the help of Naval Base Kitsap Chief Petty Officer Maungwai Soe, his wife, Yamin, and their two children, Heidi, 5, and Hunter, 15 months.

The tree, which will be delivered to the Capitol rotunda tomorrow for decorating, is a Noble fir donated by Weyerhaeuser’s Vail-area tree farm. This year’s theme is “Under the Sea.”

The festive event marks the conclusion of the association’s 28th annual Holiday Kids’ Tree Project fundraiser to benefit children and families in rural communities throughout the state.

Since 1989, AWB’s Holiday Kids’ Tree project has raised more than $390,000 for families in need. Donations gathered this year will be presented to 18 rural fire districts in nine counties, which use the funds to buy food and gifts for families in their communities. Grant, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Spokane, Thurston, Okanogan, Chelan and Walla Walla counties are this year’s recipients.

In addition to traditional decorations and 5,000 LED lights, the tree will be decorated with plush characters representing undersea characters. After the tree comes down Dec. 30, the stuffed characters will be individually wrapped along with a story book that relates to the tree’s theme and handed out at children’s hospitals.
