'Careers in Manufacturing Month' campaign recognized with PRSA Totem Award

Manufacturing offers good-paying career pathways for job-seekers across the state.

That was the message AWB and the state Employment Security Department (ESD), along with the agency's WorkSource arm, conveyed last October during the first-ever "Careers in Manufacturing Month" campaign.

For the months-long effort, the campaign was recognized with a PRSA Totem Award in the category of Special Events and Observances March 26 in Seattle.

It's a fitting award for an effort that took months of planning, covered the entire month of October 2018 and had an outreach that spanned across traditional media coverage and social media presence, both  sustained throughout the month.

Kicked off Oct. 1 with a proclamation from Gov. Jay Inslee declaring October "Careers in Manufacturing Month," the designation coincided with AWB's second-annual Manufacturing Week bus tour and the observance of national Manufacturing Day on Oct. 8.

In each of the regions -- along the more than 50 shop floor tours across the state -- local WorkSource employees, who offer services to support people who are unemployed or underemployed find career opportunities, joined the tours to learn more about the manufacturing sector, its employee needs and see some of the people they helped place in manufacturing jobs.

As part of the campaign, AWB and ESD co-created  a website -- -- within WorkSource to link job seekers with the lucrative, hands-on careers across in manufacturers. It also allows employers to post those open jobs and peruse resumes that fit their company's needs -- from medical devices and textiles to aerospace and viticulture, and everything in between.

"I'm incredibly proud of our communications team and all they do to form new partnerships, in this case to raise awareness of the family wage jobs available in the manufacturing sector," said Jason Hagey, AWB vice president, communications. "Working with ESD to promote filling the workforce pipeline and connecting workers with employers was a great match to both of our efforts to support those looking for meaningful work and the employers recruiting them."

Totem Award applicants are required to include measurement components to prove success -- social media impressions, media hits and the overall planning of the campaign.

The Careers in Manufacturing Month campaign, in conjunction with Manufacturing Week Oct. 4-12, hit more than 1.5 million Twitter impressions using #MFGisWA and the bus tour garnered press in every major media market across the state. The applications are judged by PRSA chapters outside the state, as a way to ensure feedback and selection of the winners is objective.

PRSA notes on its website that the award is a symbol of creativity and accomplishment for the public relations industry in the Puget Sound area and recognizes projects and programs that demonstrate excellence in PR and rise above the competition. It honors the best public relations programs, tactics and practitioners in the region.
