NLRB rules against franchises, saying McDonald's has joint responsibility on employee treatment

The National Labor Relations Board told McDonald's last week that it had joint responsibility with its franchisees in employee matters. The ruling is seen as a big victory for labor unions and could have major implications for workplace law, although its ramifications are not yet fully clear.

The Boeing giveaway that wasn't

First things first: The state didn't give Boeing any money. It couldn't. The Constitution forbids public gifts to private interests.

Nor did the state really forego a penny. Last fall, the prospect of thousands of jobs left other states drooling. Twenty-two of them submitted bids for 777X work, and Boeing executives were ready to jet. No tax legislation, no assembly line and no tax revenue.

2014 Legislative Review: Employment & Workplace

Fallout from the 2012 Washington Supreme Court McCleary decision to increase funding for basic education continued this legislative session as legislators battled through myriad bills in a condensed timeframe.

No other issue was discussed and debated more vehemently than education funding.
