Lawmakers introduce House's first bipartisan bill for long-term renewal of Ex-Im Bank

Rep. Gary Miller, R-Calif., vice chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, and Maxine Water, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the committee, have introduced the first bipartisan bill to give the Export-Import Bank a long-term extension.

In addition to extending the bank’s authorization, the bill makes some reforms to the program by shifting more business to the private sector, a move that’s intended to prevent abuse.

The bank is necessary to give American businesses the certainty they need to compete in a global marketplace, Miller said.

Their bill faces opposition from the chairman of the committee, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, who voted to let the bank's charter expire at the end of its current short-term reauthorization, The Hill reports.
