'Benchmarks for Washington' shows strengths and areas needing improvement

As the Washington Roundtable continues its push to make Washington a top-10 state for quality of life and innovation, the latest update of its "Benchmarks for a Better Washington" report shows areas of strength and places where the state needs to improve its competitive standing.

Washington ranks 13th in the nation for job creation, according to the report. The state is also competitive because of its low-cost electricity and its student achievement in math.

But the report notes that Washington lags behind in important areas such as road maintenance, high school graduation rates, bachelor's degree production and the state's costly unemployment and workers' compensation systems. The state also needs to make progress on narrowing the skills gap to ensure that students graduate ready to work.

WashACE has a summary of the report. Read the complete 2014 edition of "Benchmarks for a Better Washington" at waroundtable.com/benchmarks/.
