As federal Highway Trust fund coasts on fumes, Congress disagrees on a fix



The U.S. House and Senate both floated proposals last week to add $11 billion to help address the looming shortfall in the federal Highway Trust Fund, but the two chambers can't agree on a way to pay for the cash infusion, the Business Journals reported.

It's an important debate, since the trust fund is so short of money that it will begin rationing funding to states by Aug. 1 if there is no deal. What is off the table, according to House Speaker John Boehner, is an increase in the federal gas tax.
