Patrick and Susan Dunn to Receive 2006 Bruce Briggs Award
Written On: May 08, 2006
OLYMPIA—The Association of Washington Business announces Patrick and Susan Dunn, partners in Seattle-based Patrick Dunn and Associates, LTD., as the winners of its 2006 Bruce Briggs Community Service Award. AWB will present the award at its annual Spring Meeting in Spokane on May 23.

The Dunns are longtime business and civic leaders in western Washington. "They work together in their communities to make them better places," AWB President Don Brunell said. "They are wonderful people who care deeply about giving back to their community and state. They remind me of Bruce and Doris Briggs, who were partners in Briggs Nursery in Olympia for many years, and for which the award was named and established."

The Dunns have offices in Seattle and Olympia. Their public affairs firm represents a number of clients at the state level. In addition, they have been involved in projects such as developing Heritage Park and the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial on the state Capitol Campus, the Harold E. LeMay Car Museum in Tacoma, the Dunn Gardens in Seattle, the Centralia College Foundation and the AWB Capitol Holiday Kids Tree project at the state capitol. Most recently, they worked with a private sector coalition and the governor to establish a more focused approach to early learning.

Pat was counsel to former Republican Gov. John Spellman when he served as King County Executive. Pat became an assistant to the governor and the director of the Dept. of Community Development during Spellman’s governorship. He is a graduate of Williams College, Williamstown, MA, and received his law degree from Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, NY. He received a master’s degree in Public Administration from the New York University Wagner School.

After receiving her baccalaureate degree from University of Washington School of Business in 1969, Susan worked at the University of Washington and Seattle Model Cities program before moving to Olympia in 1971. Susan served as a board member for the Olympia Child Center in the 1970s and helped to organize the first Women’s Olympic Marathon Trial held in Thurston County in 1984. She is the immediate past president of the E.B. Dunn Historic Garden Trust and currently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the 10-99 Foundation. She spent more than ten years working for the Employment Security Department as special assistant to the commissioner and assistant commissioner of the department’s Employment and Training Division before retiring in 2001. In 1992, Centralia College honored Susan as its Alumna of the Year.

The Bruce Briggs Community Service Award is one of only five major awards established by AWB, named after the late Bruce Briggs, longtime AWB member and owner of Briggs Nursery in Olympia, who died suddenly in early 2000.

Bruce, his wife Doris and son Gary own and operate Briggs Nursery. Over the years, Bruce was a community leader and contributed much to the community. He also advocated tirelessly on small business, nursery and farm issues.

AWB established the S. Fred Bruhn Award in 1979 to honor a longtime dedicated member of its Board of Directors. In 1992, it established the Ron Gjerde Award to honor its outstanding volunteer lobbyist and, in 1994, started the Jim Matson Award to honor the legislator who best supported the business community over the years. In 2004, AWB established the C. David Gordon Award to recognize state civic leaders.
