AWB’s Community Service Awards Honor 19 Companies

SPOKANE – The Association of Washington Business has honored 19 companies throughout Washington for contributions to their communities.

The annual AWB Community Service Awards were presented during AWB’s Spring Board Meeting in Spokane.

In addition to the companies selected, AWB also honored Bill and Dolores Kyle, owners of Superior Insurance Services, Auburn, with the Bruce Briggs Award.

This award recognizes an individual’s efforts on behalf of his or her community.

The Kyles have been very active in helping people in need through their service clubs and as individuals. At present, they are working with the Auburn Christian Action Program, a pre-school daycare for low-income families who reside primarily in the Auburn area.

About three years ago, the Kyles became what is referred to as ”Home Town Heroes", and Bill became what is known as a "Local Legend" because of their work with the Auburn Food Bank. He was one of the founding members and became the food bank’s President of the Board.

This year’s Community Service Award winners are:

• BP Cherry Point Refinery, Ferndale, for its successful efforts to restore a formerly dead creek and salmon run.

• Premera Blue Cross, Seattle, for its generous contributions to revamping a home for developmentally disabled adults.

• Hamilton Farm Equipment, Okanogan, for the leading role it took in bringing the Business Week program to Okanogan and Omak high schools.

• Providence Hospice, Seattle, for its community outreach programs to public and private schools when grief education and support are necessary for students.

• Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc., Pullman, for its generous donations to educational institutions around the world, and its development of technical courses for the Pullman School District.

• Swedish Medical Center – Mother Joseph Clinic, Seattle, for providing orthopedics and other specialty medical care without charge to indigent and uninsured patients.

• Sound Community Bank, Seattle, for helping non-profit, charitable organizations through its Co-Branded VISA Cards, and for allowing its employees to donate the cash equivalent of vacation hours to the tsunami relief effort in South Asia.

• Brown and Brown of Washington, Tacoma, for its generous donations of time and money to helping the less fortunate in its community.

• WestCoast Hospitality Corporation, Spokane, for its generous assistance programs for its own employees, and its partnership with local hospitals to donate guest rooms in its Red Lion and WestCoast hotels for use by families of patients who otherwise might have no place to stay.

• Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Seattle, for impressive corporate-wide philanthropic initiatives, including its Rooms from the Heart and Adopt-A-Shelter programs, which support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

• Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce, Marysville, for its Entrepreneurial Business Development Center, which offers free business counseling, classes/seminars and access to small business loans to potential and established small businesses.

• Centex Homes, Bellevue, for taking the lead in building a 3,200 square foot home that was showcased on ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” for a family that had lost their home in a fire and were unable to rebuild due to lack of insurance.

• Fluor Hanford, Inc., Richland, for its participation in community service projects, with the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Cities and the Boys and Girls Club of Benton and Franklin counties.

• Telect, Inc., Liberty Lake, for encouraging and allowing employees to use up to three days per year from their sick leave bank to participate in volunteer activities.

• Process Heating, Seattle, for taking an active role on many community involvement projects, including founding and maintaining ArtWorks, a successful non-profit that helps at risk and court-involved kids improve their lives.

• Hewlett-Packard, Vancouver, for its varied and impressive support of the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington.

• Benton Rural Electric Association, Prosser, for its support end encouragement of its staff members to become active in volunteer efforts in their communities.

• University Mechanical Contractors, Inc., Mukilteo, for it strong support of many youth-oriented organizations and programs.

• Troutlodge, Sumner, received an overall Community Service Award for its spectacularly successful Cooperative Trout Enhancement Program (CTEP), which has enhance the fishing possibilities in over 250 public lakes in Washington state.

“These companies realize the importance of being good neighbors in their communities,” said AWB President Don Brunell. “All of them have invested substantial time, money and other resources to improve their corner of the state.”
