AWB's Retro Program Returns $2.7 Million to Its Members
Written On: December 30, 2004
OLYMPIA—The Association of Washington Business’ workers’ compensation retrospective rating program (CompWise) returned more than $2.7 million directly to Association members in 2004.

AWB started CompWise in 1996 and over the last eight years, the Association has returned more than $21 million to it members.

“AWB’s CompWise program is designed to improve workplace safety, reduce accidents, and treat and return injured people back to work,” says AWB President Don Brunell. “The state charges workers’ comp premiums to our members and retro programs like CompWise allow employers with good safety and claims management records to receive refunds. Under AWB’s retro program the entire refund goes directly back to the employer.”

CompWise provides a valuable service by helping members improve worker safety as well as save money. The program is currently available to manufacturing firms, temporary employment agencies, and service, retail and wholesale companies.

“It allows employers with superior claims experience to ‘pool’ together,” Brunell added. Pooling a group together dramatically improves participants' refund potential. In addition, the program offers proactive claims management, safety training and education along with management information reporting.

Just as several other companies enrolled in CompWise, Printcom owners Jim and Judy Coovert’s participation in the program was a smart business decision. “It’s a terrific program,” Judy Coovert said. “We have received a refund every year we’ve participated.”

"And unlike some other organizations that offer Retro programs, AWB does not take a cut of the refund," Debra Brown, AWB’s senior vice president for member services said. "As a result, members take home every penny."

The AWB Retro program provides complete claims management, loss control, workplace safety education and compliance training. Another hallmark of the Retro program is the strict underwriting criteria. AWB carefully screens members who want to join CompWise before they enroll. If a member can’t qualify immediately, AWB assists in correcting any problems so they can become eligible for the program.
