OLYMPIA—With the apparent likelihood of a second recount in the tight gubernatorial race, Association of Washington Business’s President Don Brunell said his organization is concentrating on assisting with the transition to the new administration.
“Time is growing short! In just over a month a new governor will take office, and he or she needs to have agency directors and key staff in place to run the state,” Brunell said. “The outcome of the election may be in doubt well into December so it is imperative to make sure the transition occurs as smoothly as possible.” “These are daunting tasks under the best of conditions,” Brunell said. “The transition time from one administration to the next in a normal election is compressed and difficult. This year we are starting a month behind and lots needs to be done quickly. Regardless of another recount or potential litigation, we are offering our assistance to help make sure the transition from the Locke to the new administration goes ahead full steam and is completed on time in January.”
Rossi won the election by 241 votes and the recount by 42 votes. That recount was completed just before Thanksgiving. If by some chance the election is reversed by the courts or in a subsequent hand recount, AWB will offer its assistance to Attorney General Christine Gregoire.
