SHORELINE – James Alan Salon is one of 19 Washington businesses recently honored at the Association of Washington Business (AWB) Board of Directors meeting as a recipient of the 2003 Better Workplace Award for going the extra mile in creating and maintaining better workplaces.

AWB President Don Brunell and Board Chair Mike Bernard were on hand to present the awards Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Seattle Renaissance Madison Hotel.

The 2003 AWB Better Workplace Awards were given to AWB member businesses both small and large. Award categories included workplace safety, job training and advancement, and innovative benefit and compensation programs. The annual awards program recognizes AWB member companies that go the extra mile to create workplaces that are family-friendly, promote safety and enable employees to achieve their best. In recognizing those outstanding companies, the awards also draw attention to examples of workplace policies that may help other companies identify and develop programs aimed at boosting morale, increasing productivity, improving recruiting and retention, and reducing training costs.

An independent panel of judges chose the winners.

James Alan Salon was chosen as a winner in the innovative benefits/compensation programs category with fewer than 25 employees. Besides that basic 401(k) savings, pension plans, paid vacation, and medical and dental benefits, the company also conducts an Incentive Bonus Payout program. Employees with 500 hours or more worked during the plan year receive a percentage of a bonus pool after year-end processing is completed. The salon’s 2003 bonus pool is $25,500.
