MALAGA – Alcoa Wenatchee Works is one of 19 Washington businesses recently honored at the Association of Washington Business (AWB) Board of Directors meeting as a recipient of the 2003 Better Workplace Award for going the extra mile in creating and maintaining better workplaces.
AWB President Don Brunell and Board Chair Mike Bernard were on hand to present the awards Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Seattle Renaissance Madison Hotel.
The 2003 AWB Better Workplace Awards were given to AWB member businesses both small and large. Award categories included workplace safety, job training and advancement, and innovative benefit and compensation programs. The annual awards program recognizes AWB member companies that go the extra mile to create workplaces that are family-friendly, promote safety and enable employees to achieve their best. In recognizing those outstanding companies, the awards also draw attention to examples of workplace policies that may help other companies identify and develop programs aimed at boosting morale, increasing productivity, improving recruiting and retention, and reducing training costs.
An independent panel of judges chose the winners.
Alcoa Wenatchee Works was chosen as a winner in the job training category with more than 250 employees. The Malaga company has provided its employees the opportunity to give back to their community. The company has contributed over 78,000 hours of labor and expertise to local non-profit agencies, schools, municipalities and county departments. After making one smelting plant ready for a safe and efficient restart, employees were given the opportunity to devote a portion of their workweek to community service projects. As volunteers, they continued to receive full employment benefits. Alcoa’s volunteer programs allow employees to give back to the community while gaining skills and life experience.
