OLYMPIA – Association of Washington Business members recently took part in a survey conducted by the Moore Information Co. The results of this survey may spell disaster for Washington’s economy if the black clouds of recession do not clear soon.
The survey polled approximately 2,500 members on a variety of issues, such as employment, the state budget, health insurance and revenue expectations.
The number one concern for employers in Washington state right now is economic uncertainty and business conditions, said 21 percent of those polled. Tax burden ranked a close second.
“To hurt business means to hurt job providers,” said AWB President Don Brunell. “It’s paramount that the Legislature and business work together during the next session. Changes have to be made or employers will continue to carry the burden of higher taxes on their back”
Jobs are not something Washington can afford to lose any more of as the unemployment rate hits new highs.
According to the survey, 75 percent of businesses that added jobs last year added fewer than 10 positions. Eighty-two percent of those businesses that plan on adding personnel will add fewer than 10 positions. Four in ten AWB members cut their employment numbers in the last year. Members of larger businesses (100+) are expecting to do the same this year.
