OLYMPIA---The Association of Washington Business (AWB) is again sponsoring the state’s unofficial holiday tree, which will be lit on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. on the grounds of the state capitol.
The tree is a 40-foot Douglas fir provided by Weyerhaeuser Company from its Vail Tree Farm south of Olympia. Weyerhaeuser, which has provided the tree for the last decade, cuts and delivers it to the capitol where the state’s groundskeepers erect and decorate it.
“This year will be different,” AWB President Don Brunell said. “Traditionally, the tree stood in the rotunda of the state capitol; however, for the next couple of years the capitol building is closed for extensive renovations.”
The 2002 version will feature several thousand colorful lights. In addition, the Tivoli Fountain will be running with accent lighting. Cherry Lane will also be lit. Families can either drive or walk by the capitol campus and enjoy the tree at night.
Brunell said, AWB, the Capitol Campus Volunteers and the Dept. of General Administration wanted to keep the tradition going and decided upon the outdoor tree. Families are welcome to come to the Temple of Justice after the tree lighting, visit with Santa Claus and enjoy cookies and milk.
Last year, more than $10,000 was donated to rural fire departments who, in turn, shop and deliver the gifts to deserving children in their communities.
“There is so much need this year because of our sluggish economy and high unemployment, we felt we needed to continue the program,” Brunell added. “We will have a tree that everyone can enjoy by just driving by the capitol.”
