OLYMPIA -- The Association of Washington Business (AWB) has pledged to work with Governor Locke and legislators to implement the recommendations of the Washington Competitiveness Council.
AWB, the state’s oldest and largest statewide business association and Washington’s state chamber of commerce, commended the Governor and council members for their hard work and final report. The report was issued Tuesday afternoon at a press conference in Seattle.
Don Brunell, AWB President, said many of the recommendations in the Governor’s report fit hand in glove with recommendations of the Washington Alliance for a Competitive Economy (WashACE). WashACE was formed two years ago by AWB, the Washington Roundtable and the Washington Research Council to keep our state’s employers competitive and to provide jobs.
AWB and WashACE have strongly supported additional funding to eliminate traffic congestion, to promote infrastructure improvements for water storage and electricity generation and transmission and to streamline the state’s permitting systems. WashACE has also promoted tax policies which encourage investment in Washington business.
“We are very pleased that Governor Locke’s Council recognized that changes have to be made in our regulatory system and took on tough issues like the controversial ergonomics rules promulgated by the Dept. of Labor and Industries,” Brunell said. “And, we are pleased the Council focused on changes needed at agencies like the Department of Ecology.”
Brunell indicated citizens and business are frustrated dealing with our state’s regulatory process. “In recent years, Governor Locke and legislators have made some important improvements, yet we have a long way to go. The Governor’s Council recognized that changes need to occur and AWB pledges its support to work with the Governor and legislature on this problem.”
Finally, Brunell commended the members of the Council, many of which are AWB Board members. “We appreciate their time and dedication to this important project and the leadership of the Governor and key legislative leaders. Now the real work begins—making the recommendations happen.”
