OLYMPIA – Incumbent Governor Gary Locke will debate Republican challenger John Carlson, KVI radio commentator, at the Association of Washington Business (AWB) 2000 Policy Summit, set for Sept. 27-29 at the Inn at Semi-ah-moo near Blaine, Wash.
Debates will also be held between Washington Insurance Commissioner candidates Mike Kreidler, Democrat, and Don Davidson, Republican; as well as Washington Commissioner of Public Lands candidates Mike Lowry, Democrat, and Doug Sutherland, Republican.
The event will be aired live across the state on TVW. To find out which local channel carries TVW broadcasting, visit TVW on the Web at www.tvw.org, or call TVW at (360) 586-5555.
The annual Policy Summit is AWB’s most high-profile event, noted throughout the region for bringing opinion leaders and policymakers together for thought-provoking discussions on issues critical to businesses.
The increasing reliance of Western states – including Washington – on deciding public policy by voter initiative will be addressed by keynote speaker Peter Harkness, publisher of Governing magazine. Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro and initiative promoter Tim Eyman will talk about how initiatives are changing the balance of power in the West – and the implications of that change.
This year, some of the most influential people in Washington politics will talk about candidates for elected office as well as the political agendas that will set the tone for the 2001 legislative session. In addition, a panel of Washington journalists will discuss how media reporting shapes the top issues of the election season.
