AWB Signs on to Help Coordinate Programs for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Veterans
Written On: November 5, 2004
CAMP MURRAY---Representing the employer community, the Association of Washington Business (AWB) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) designed to help returning soldiers to transition back to their civilian lives.

“It is a public-private partnership designed to help soldiers, sailors, airmen and veterans transition back to civilian employment while making sure the benefits they need are provided in an expedited way,” AWB President Don Brunell said.

“This partnership will provide an opportunity to stay in touch with these young men and women at critical intervals, as well as letting them know the state of Washington appreciates their sacrifice and stands ready to provide assistance to them and their families,” said John King, Director of Washington State Veterans Affairs.

“John makes a good point and representing the private sector, we believe we have a vital role in helping our Guard and Reserve soldiers, sailors and airmen transition back to their jobs once released from active duty,” Brunell said.

Brunell went on to say that AWB is looking for ways to help veterans who are disabled to find education, training and employment opportunities. “This is the least we can do to help those who have protected us.”

Along with AWB, the Washington National Guard (WNG), the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA), Employment Security Department (ESD), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Labor signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The agreement augments Dept. of Defense and Veterans Administration transition services already available to returning soldiers. It focuses on “after active duty” support to the thousands of members of the Washington National Guard and reservists mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. It ensures that all Washington National Guard and Reserve veterans are welcomed home and provided information to access VA health care, claims assistance, employment services and mental health services.
