This year the Association of Washington Business celebrates its 15th year sponsoring the state’s holiday tree on the Capitol Building grounds in Olympia as part of the Capitol Holiday Kids’ Tree Project. AWB members provide the 35-foot fir tree, funding for its decorations, and gathers approximately $10,000 in contributions for needy families.
AWB took over the project in 1989 when it appeared the state would not have a decorated tree for the holidays. Since then the tree has been featured in publications and broadcasts throughout the northwest and nationally, including Sunset Magazine.
Because the Capitol Building is undergoing a $100-million restoration, it’s an outdoor tree for the third year. It is located near the Tivoli Fountain and will be lit on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. and will remain lit through the holidays.
“We hope to be back in the Capitol Building next year and return to the tradition of an indoor tree in the Rotunda,” AWB President Don Brunell said.
The Holiday Tree is the symbol of the Capitol Holiday Kids’ Project, sponsored by AWB in cooperation with the Capitol Campus Volunteers. This year, AWB member Port Blakely Tree Farms and the Washington Forest Protection Association will be donating the tree.
More than 100 AWB members and friends from Colville to Vancouver contributed almost $10,000 to make the holiday brighter for children in rural areas of Thurston, Pierce, Mason and Grays Harbor counties. Santa’s helpers, who moonlight as volunteer firefighters in the participating counties, distribute gifts to needy rural families.
“Since the project started 15 years ago, AWB members have donated more than $175,000,” Brunell said. “All of the money goes to the rural firefighters to buy the gifts. Too often the needy in rural areas are forgotten. The rural firefighters and AWB members have filled that void, and it is one of the best things we do each year.”
