CompWise is a Win for Employers and Employees

During the 1980s, the Department of Labor and Industries created its retrospective rating program, which allows trade organizations to pool together members for workers’ compensation purposes. Retrospective rating provides one of the only opportunities for small- and mid-sized employers to exercise more control over workers’ comp costs because their businesses are not able to self-insure like larger companies.

Since 1996, AWB’s Retro program, CompWise, has helped participating members lower net workers’ compensation costs. To date, CompWise has refunded nearly $21 million to employers in the retail, wholesale, service, manufacturing and temporary employment industries. While refunds help lower an employer’s overall program costs, equally important is reducing the amount of upfront premiums paid.

Through CompWise, employers have access to services such as claims management, loss prevention and risk management; services that they may not be able to afford outside a group program. First and foremost, CompWise helps employers maintain a safe workplace, but when a claim does occur, CompWise ensures it is handled appropriately and resolved in a timely manner. CompWise recognizes the importance of helping injured workers get back to work quickly and safely as this benefits both the employee and the employer. Employers receive assistance on how to develop an effective program tailored to their specific needs. Partnering with CompWise has proven to be a win-win for countless employers.

“Our company is so small. We really cannot afford a human resources specialist to manage our employees, and we do not have time to deal with regulations,” said Judy Coovert of PrintCom, Inc. in Seattle. “It is nice having someone to manage the system for us. CompWise really understands the complex working laws in Washington state and does a really good job in explaining what needs to be done for our workers.”
