Dean Strawn, owner of Dependable Janitor Service in Kennewick, was presented the 2004 Bruce Briggs Award for community service at the annual Association of Washington Business Spring Board Meeting in Spokane on May 18. It is one of only four prestigious awards AWB presents each year.
Strawn, a long-time Tri-Cities resident, serves on AWB’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He joined AWB’s Board in 1993 and is chair of AWB’s Small Business Policy Council.
A Kiwanian since 1970, Strawn was club president in 1974 and helped organize the Kennewick Chamber of Commerce in 1986. He was chamber President in 1986-1987 and has been a Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau board member since 1986. He served as bureau president in 1990 and 1998.
In 1998, he was selected Tri-Citian of the Year for service to the community and was also chosen as Kennewick Man of the Year in 1999. In late 2000, the Kennewick City Council picked him as one of five board members to serve on the Kennewick Public Facilities District Board. He became board president with the assignment to build the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick. The center was constructed on budget and on time and opened in June.
Dean and Sandi, his wife of 40 years, own Dependable Janitor Service in Kennewick and have since 1970. The couple has two grown children, Diona Schilling and Steve Strawn, and three grandchildren.
“Dean is an energetic team leader who leaves a legacy of bettering an organization, project, church and community. He is a tireless worker,” AWB President Don Brunell said.
“He is a voice of reason and makes intelligent and strong decisions,” Kris Johnson, executive director of the Tri-City Area Chamber of Commerce, added. “He cares about each organization he serves on and looks toward better ways to allow that organization to serve the community.”
