Bruce Briggs Award Honors AWB Community Leaders
Written On: July/August 2003
Three years ago, the Association of Washington Business established the Bruce Briggs Community Service Award in honor of the late Bruce Briggs, long-time AWB member and owner of Briggs Nursery in Olympia, who died suddenly in early 2000.

Bruce, his wife Doris and son Gary owned and operated Briggs Nursery. Over the years, Bruce was a community leader and contributed much to the community. He also was a tireless advocate for small business, nursery and farm issues.

In Olympia, Bruce led the drive to build a new YMCA. The new facility in Olympia is now called the Briggs Branch and is built on land adjacent to the Briggs Nursery and donated by the Briggs family.

In his memory, the Association of Washington Business established the “Bruce Briggs Community Service Award.” It is presented annually to an AWB member who, like Bruce, has contributed to his or her community over the years. The award is presented at the Association’s annual spring meeting in Spokane in conjunction with AWB’s annual Community Service Awards Program.

The Bruce Briggs Community Service Award is the fourth major award established by AWB. The association established the S. Fred Bruhn Award in 1979 to honor a long-time dedicated member of its board of directors. In 1992, it established the Ron Gjerde Award to honor its outstanding volunteer lobbyist and in 1994 AWB started the Jim Matson Award to honor the legislator who has been supportive of business over the years.

Past Bruce Briggs Award winners include:

Bruce Briggs, Briggs Nursery, Olympia 2000
Mike Porter, Tacoma Diesel, Tacoma 2001
Patrick Quigg, Grays Harbor Paper, Hoquiam 2002
Gerri Coleman, Express Personnel, Walla Walla 2003
