AWB Spring Board Meeting in Spokane on May 21-22
Written On: Monday, April 14, 2008

AWB member testifies in support of stronger math requirements
Mike Bernard, AWB member and co-chair of the Education and Training Committee, testified at the March 27 meeting of the Washington State Board of Education in support of the board’s proposal requiring that students take three years of math coursework to graduate, with the final year culminating in passage of at least Algebra II or Integrated Mathematics III. Students enrolled in career and technical programs will have the option of meeting the requirement through the standard math coursework or specific career or technical math courses on the same level of difficulty. This important step ensures that students will be equipped with the skills necessary to successfully engage in either higher education or workplace opportunities after graduation. For more information, please contact AWB’s Donna Steward at (360) 943-1600 or DonnaS@awb.org.

AWB urges Washington delegation to support Korea Free Trade Agreement
Pope Benedict XVI is not the only high-level dignitary to visit the nation’s capitol this spring. South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak makes his first official visit to Washington, D.C., in early May.  He will try to help pass the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement. The agreement opens the door to more exports of U.S. goods, food products and services to a vibrant $1 trillion-a-year market and establishes model legal protections for U.S. companies and farmers doing business with Korea. Among the agreement’s provisions is full resumption of U.S. beef exports to South Korea, something dear to the hearts of Washington cattlemen. AWB President Don C. Brunell recently wrote to Washington’s congressional delegation urging approval of the agreement. For more information, please contact Don Brunell at DonB@awb.org or (360)-943-1600.

Think dams aren’t “Green?” — read Olympia Business Watch
In anticipation of a federal — and perhaps a Washington state — cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gases, Chelan Public Utilities District registered its carbon offsets with the Chicago Climate Exchange, according to a story by Les Blumenthal in The News Tribune (Tacoma, Wash.). The PUD figures that recent improvements to Rocky Reach Dam just north of Wenatchee on the Columbia River means that 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide won’t be pumped into the atmosphere and, therefore, are up for sale. Of the 700,000 tons for sale on the exchange, 160,000 are already sold. To read more about it, log on to Olympia Business Watch.

Want to know how the folks in New Jersey feel about Paid Family Leave?
Last year, the New Jersey Legislature passed a paid family leave act allowing workers up to six weeks off to care for a newborn or newly adopted child, or a sick parent, spouse or child. They can collect up to two-thirds of their normal pay, to a maximum of $524 a week. The benefit is funded by worker contributions of an estimated $33 a year through a mandatory employee payroll tax. Payroll deductions are slated to begin Jan. 1, 2009, with benefits to be available beginning July 1, 2009. The bill is very similar to California’s 2004 law. To get the reaction from your counterparts in New Jersey, log on to Olympia Business Watch.

Reminder to employers: New leave-of-absence law now in effect
Gov. Chris Gregoire signed a new law on April 1 that provides a “reasonable period of leave,” with or without pay, to employees who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking, so they can take care of certain needs including legal, law enforcement, medical, psychological, or victim services. The law requires job reinstatement and continuation of benefits like health care coverage when they return to work. There is no specified maximum amount of leave, only that it be “reasonable.” This new law applies to employers of all sizes, and potentially to any affected employee regardless of length of service or part-time/full-time status. Employees taking leave are to give notice to employers, and employers may require verification. The law also imposes confidentiality and posting requirements on employers. Violations of the new law are enforced by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries or through a private lawsuit. Stay tuned—AWB will be issuing a fact sheet on the requirements of the new law on our Web site, as well as incorporating the required notice into our annual employment law posters. For more information, contact AWB’s Kris Tefft at KrisT@awb.org or (360) 943-1600.
