Washington Employers Win Big in Court – Disability Lawsuits Restricted!
The state’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously that persons who sue employers for failing to accommodate disabilities must prove accommodations are medically necessary. The ruling stems from a lawsuit that claimed Foodmaker, Inc. failed to reasonably accommodate a worker suffering from mental disabilities by not providing enough feedback on his performance. AWB, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief and participated in oral arguments with is very pleased with this ruling. Contact AWB’s Kris Tefft at (360) 943-1600 or KrisT@awb.org.

Democrats Push For Charter Schools at Convention in Boston - What’s Wrong with WEA?
As Democrats convene in Boston this week to adopt a 2004 election platform and nominate their candidate for President, they will consider a platform with following language: “Instead of pushing private school vouchers that funnel scarce dollars away from the public schools, we will support public school choice, including charter schools and magnet schools that meet the same high standards as other schools.” In contrast, Washington’s teacher union, the Washington Education Association (WEA), wants voters to repeal the charter schools law backed by the Legislature, Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson and Gov. Gary Locke. Go to www.ndol.org/documents/2004platform.pdf to see the entire platform.
