Election Results In – Bush Re-Elected, Gubernatorial Race Too Close to Call!
With 286 electoral votes to John Kerry’s 252, President Bush won re-election after a hard fought, bitter campaign. Unlike the 2000 election, Bush also carried the popular vote. Meanwhile, in Washington state, the gubernatorial race between Dino Rossi and Christine Gregoire remains too close to call. At last count, Gregoire was ahead by less than 17,000 votes, but there are over 250,000 absentee votes yet to be counted. Stay tuned! For details on all statewide races, see www.awb.org/cgi-bin/absolutenm/templates/?a=784&z=12.
Top Two Primary Passes – Gambling/Property Tax Initiative and Charter Schools Bite the Dust!
Washington overwhelmingly approved the AWB-endorsed Initiative 872, which will bring a top two primary system to Washington state. Unfortunately, voters approved the so-called Hanford cleanup Initiative 297, which AWB opposed. Sadly, voters rejected Initiative 892, which would have lowered property taxes and brought fairness to Washington’s gaming industry, and also voted down Referendum 55, which would have finally allowed charter schools in Washington state.

In addition, all three AWB-endorsed Washington State Supreme Court candidates were elected – Jim Johnson, Barbara Madsen and Richard Sanders.
Democrats Hold State House of Representatives – Republicans Lose Senate!
It appears Democrats have increased their margin in the Washington House of Representatives and have taken control of the Senate. Democrats could have 26 or 27 members of the Senate, while Republicans would have 23 or 22. Previously, the GOP controlled the Senate 25-24. In the House, Democrats could have as many as 56 members to the Republicans’ 43 depending upon the outcome of absentee ballot counting.

Health Care Update – Pay-or-Play Ballot Measure Defeated in California!
California’s pay-or-play health care proposition was defeated by the voters (50-49.1 percent). This misbegotten legacy of former California Gov. Gray Davis’ administration would have savaged California’s already troubled economy. Pay-or-play’s defeat is an enormous blessing to both California and the nation. Indeed, had this proposition passed, it is likely that a similar measure would have been put on the ballot in Washington state.
