Barbara Madsen (Contact: Committee to Re-Elect Barbara Madsen, PO Box 46752, Seattle, WA 98146, E-mail: madsencampaign@earthlink.net), Richard Sanders (Contact: Sanders for Supreme Court, PO Box 11757, Olympia, WA 98508-1757, Phone: (360) 570-8669, E-mail: JusticeSanders@seanet.com, Web: www.friendsofjustice.com), and Jim Johnson (Contact: Jim Johnson for Justice, PO Box 7099, Olympia, WA 98507, E-mail: alexhayes@comcast.net, Web: www.Jimjohnsonforjustice.com) are AWB’s choices for the Washington State Supreme Court. Supreme Court candidates responded to questionnaires and were interviewed by AWB’s Legal Affairs Committee. The committee’s recommendations were approved by AWB’s Executive Committee. “Today, court decisions often have more impact on employers than government regulations or legislation,” AWB President Don Brunell said. New Federal Overtime Rules Go Into Effect Tomorrow – Be Prepared!
The new federal rules relating to white collar (professional, executive, administrative) employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act go into effect tomorrow. Most Washington employers will see little or no change, but certain elements of the new rules will impact Washington. Now is a good time for employers to review exempt employees’ status to ensure compliance with state and federal law. AWB has worked with the Department of Labor & Industries on a FAQ sheet comparing Washington law with the new rules. See www.lni.wa.gov/workplacerights/wages/overtime/default.asp.
