OLYMPIA—Kristen Whitener, president of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce, represented Washington’s business community at the National Governors Association state sector strategy meeting in Chicago last week. Whitener received the nomination as Washington’s business advocate by the Association of Washington Business.
Delegates from six states worked to strengthen local sector strategies for education and economic development. Sector strategies allow states to focus on key regional industries by bringing economic development, workforce development and education issues together. This affects the way people think about economic development issues, advancement of low-income workers, preservation of middle-class jobs, as well as leveraging and alignment of resources and strategies.
"The NGA selected Washington as a participant because of all the work we have already done in workforce development and education," Whitener said. "I was there to make sure that small businesses in Washington had a voice in the discussion."
Using sector strategies helps both employers and workers by focusing on a specific industry over an extended period. NGA has also set up a comprehensive learning exchange which provides resources to all states and focuses on providing lessons—and a venue in which to discuss them—to states that are considering developing them.
The Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce is a member of the Association of Washington Business.
